What’s the Recipe of a Good Digital Marketer?

Hmm, let see:

A cup of effective Communication

One narrowed Niche (the gold!)

Lots of effective Content

A pinch of SEO

A teaspoon of Social Media

A Dash of Email Marketing

A big dollop of an amazing and helpful Product

I think that’s it, right?

Nooo, what about the person you are going to offer it all? The basic ingredient that makes the foundation of any digital marketing recipe?

It’s Your Target Audience a.k.a Ideal Customer

And without identifying your ideal customer persona, you cannot be a good marketer. So many people just get into it, only to realize they are doing it all wrong.

I personally know one such person, let me tell you her story.

So there was this woman who loved to write. When she found that blogging is a great way to show her writings to the public and also earn money from it, she created her blog immediately and started writing.

After writing a few blog posts, she ran out of ideas, or you can say the topic she had chosen for the blog was too vast. There were already many established and authoritative bloggers in that niche and she got inferiority complex after realizing it. The lack of guidance and low confidence just got too much to her one day, and she quit blogging.

What do you think her major mistakes were?

  • She didn’t narrow her niche
  • She didn’t identify her audience
  • She quit early.

Do you know who that woman is? Me, Yes that was me a year before, I made these mistakes which made me quit blogging for a while. I lost precious months of writing and growing my blog.

So, as you can see, I learned the hard way the importance of identifying your niche, knowing your target audience and communicating with them. When I started working on my blog again, I tried to rectify all those mistakes as best I can.

So in the second class of Digital Deepak Internship, when our mentor discussed effective communication skills and creating a customer avatar, I felt this class was just made for me, I learned so many things that I know is going to help me in my blog. With this internship, I know this time my digital marketing recipe would be awesome. πŸ™‚

So let’s get to the learning’s of the 2nd Class class in detail;

Effective communication is the key to selling your product

If you are not good at communication, you won’t be able to connect with the customer and that means you will lose a sell.

And, in the digital space, it’s more important to communicate effectively because you are not communicating with the audience face to face. You are communicating through your content which could be a blog post, video, or email. The audience should feel like you are talking to them personally.

Here are a few things that can help you make your communication better:

  • Be Authentic

It’s okay to be inspired by someone, but if you copy them, you will get tired at some point. And more than that, people tend to recognize fakeness pretty quickly.

  • Experience

Always keep learning, do new things, build your experience, it will help you immensely in communicating with people.

  • Narrow and identify your Audience

Find your target customers and understand their pain points. This was also the second major learning of the session. So let’s get to it next.

How to find your Ideal Customer Avatar / Target Audience

“If everyone is your audience then no-one is your audience.”

So we now know that you have to find your target customer, but how do you do it? The best way to do it is to create your ideal customer Avatar/Persona.  You can do that by creating survey forms and having people who could be your potential audience fill it.

I am a mom blogger who writes about parenting and mom life struggles, my audiences are Moms. But there are millions of Moms out there with different needs and struggles. I can’t serve them all.

So, to narrow my niche and find my ideal customer Avatar, I created the survey below.

(click on the image to see the complete form)

I shared this with my mom friends, acquaintances, and on social media, I got around 34 responses.

Here are the summary of results of the filled out form, these are statistics of the 3 most important questions of my survey to identify my customer avatar.

From the results of the survey, this is my Ideal Customer Avatar:

Let’s name her Meera, her average age is 30-35 years, she is a Stay at Home Mom of a 1-year-old baby. She wants to start working from home and earn money. She can only work 5-6 hours a week. She is interested in blogging/content writing/vlogging work, which she can do at home. She wants to learn about the opportunities and needs some guidance to start her career.

Hii, This is Meera, I need your help Poorvi!

There, I found my ideal customer, Hurray! Now, I can plan my blog posts, lead magnets, and products to satisfy the needs of my Ideal Customer.

And the recipe for a good digital marketer is complete. I found the basic ingredient after all. πŸ™‚

Conclusion

The recipe for a good digital marketer is incomplete without a tablespoon of understanding your audience. In other words, it is crucial to know your ideal customer. And you have to be able to communicate with your ideal customer effectively, so they really listen to you and get inclined to buy your product.

That’s all for now, let’s see what exciting things we learn in the next session. If you want to read about the previous session, click here.
